[ there are a lot of things poe's told him in confidence, things he won't divulge right away, but suffice it to say, there's almost nothing they keep from one another. ]
Oh. Uh, well —
[ he has to think about that for a second, trying to decide if there's anything that poe's ever mentioned being in need of. ]
Much as I'd love to find a way to just gift him his old X-wing... [ he chuckles briefly. ] We're actually looking at moving into our own place soon, so are there any traditional gifts you give back home for that?
Congratulations! Though some of the 'traditional' gifts from back home aren't things I'd inflict on friends. There's this spiced cake that's practically a rock for how dense it is. I could also get you more useful things and less traditional things.
Useful? Useful, I think. It won't be a very big space — we're sort of eyeing the adjacent building right next to where the garage is, just so we can be closer to it if necessary, but... it'll probably be a little less than what we have in the Up now.
[ he chuckles, mostly at himself. ] Oh, it's a ship. Spaceship. Technically, a short-range starfighter. Not sure how much Poe might've told you about where we're from, but there's a lot of space travel involved. [ and there's a notable shift in the pride in his voice when he adds: ] He's one of the best pilots out there.
I'll look for useful, then. [He could always brainstorm with Hawke later on what 'useful' looked like.
As for the rest...Finn's pride comes through in his voice and it puts a smile in Anders'. He knew that tone, the pride mixed with affection.]
I'm sure he is. He mentioned a bit of it, but more about what you both went through, the fight you had on your hands and the challenges still ahead. I wonder, though, do you happen to have any pictures of the craft? Could you even draw it or get someone else to, perhaps?
[Making something from scratch would take more time, but it might be worth it if this ship was as important to Poe as Finn implied.]
[ now that is a good question, and finn has to mull over it for a second, giving voice to a few thoughtful sounds before answering. ]
You know, I don't, but... I think I could draw you up something. Poe might have some kind of schematic or image in his things, but that wouldn't be too difficult for me to get my hands on. And I can probably tuck it back with him before he even notices it's missing.
[ it's not like poe's in the middle of actually building himself a new x-wing at the moment, either. but worst case, finn can always sketch something decently or describe it to someone who's skilled enough to draw it out. ]
[Anders gives a pause on his end as well, something thoughtful as he mulled over the options.]
A schematic or drawing would be enough, I think. I couldn't manage a real one and it would take some time to make it from scratch, but I might be able to manage a miniature, animated version of it. Do you think that's something he'd like?
[There was a sound of pen to paper as Anders started taking his own notes, spells to look into, things he might use to make the project easier. It would likely take him the better part of a month, but it might be doable.]
Oh, yeah, sure. [ there's no keeping the excitement out of his voice as he thinks about something like that and poe's potential reaction to it. ]
I think it's just something he misses from home, you know? And I know I can't give that to him here, but even something close... [ he clears his throat quietly. ] I know it'd mean a lot.
[The smile he's got from Finn's excitement carries in his voice.]
I know what you mean. Perfect, then, I 'll get started on what I can and begin in earnest once you send me pictures of those schematics.
Now, presents are better as surprises but, in this case, I'd rather just offer: is there anything I could look into making for you? It doesn't have to be the same type of thing, but I'd be happy to put my magic at your disposal if there's something you might need for yourself?
[ and now he has to figure out how to sneak it around poe without letting on to poe that he's sneaking anything. he... doesn't really have a very good sabacc face. ]
Who, me? Oh, wow, that's really nice of you, but I don't... [ he drops off for a second, but mostly because he's just thinking. ] What do you tend to use your magic for? If that's not too big a question or anything.
No, not at all. [It was a reasonable question, especially from someone who might not be used to magic. Really, even one who was, there were so many kinds out there.]
I'm a healer, that's where most of my skill lays, but I also have talent with some electricity and spirit magic for fighting. I've been learning a friend's magic who came from another world, however, and that's the sort I'll be using for our project. Any particular reason you ask or just curiosity?
[ along the same lines, it's why the force can prove to be so overwhelming to him, just thinking about all the things people can use it for. it's the simplest comparison he can draw to the magic that he's seen other people use, knows they can wield. ]
So you have... special areas of skill, something like that? [ he asks so he ensures he's understanding it correctly. ]
The healing part, though... would you have anything for, like, soreness? I mean, muscle soreness. [ considering this place, he feels the sudden compulsion to clarify what he means. ] Sometimes after a long day at the garage... well, something to help with that, maybe?
[ although his first instinct is to say the first one, there's a part of him, deep down, that wants to take advantage of the second option for more than one reason. reason that he thinks anders might understand, at least, if he and poe are even remotely familiar with each other. ]
The balm would be nice, right? In case — [ he clears his throat, which has the added effect of deepening it like he's divulging a secret, even if they're the only ones who can hear each other. ] In case I'd want to, you know. Share it.
[Oh, good. That's so sweet, he doesn't even want to tease him as much anymore, rather than just help him.]
You most certainly could do that. It would be like a lotion and it would cause a bit of a tingling sensation which would be nice. Perfectly safe anywhere you'd like and would heal light issues with skin or muscle. I'll make you a large pot of it. Any scent requests?
[ he pauses, trailing off for a second. thinks about poe. thinks about everything he's learned about where the other man is from, even if he's never been to that world himself. endor. ]
Is there any way to make it smell like, you know, a forest? Nothing too strong, just... like that scent you can breathe in when you're surrounded by trees as tall as ten men stacked up on top of each other. Like everything around you is just green.
Yes, I believe I can. That scent of fresh and cool, a slight bit of dirt but mostly leaf and you're not sure how green has a smell, but it must be that.
[ he doesn't know how anders managed to perfectly encapsulate everything he's trying to describe, but there's a hushed quality to his voice, like he's grateful that the other man gets it.
it isn't occurring to him yet that even the gift he's supposed to be suggesting for himself is still one that he's intending for poe. ]
Something fresh. Almost like it's rained the night before so everything just has that smell of... wet over it.
I know exactly what you mean. I'll work on them both and have them ready for...the other gift-giving holiday. The one most people from Earth celebrate? I don't know if you do, but it'll likely be ready by then.
[He knows all too well, the memory was ingrained in him, that first time he'd wandered into a forest after a childhood on the plains of Ferelden and then the rest of his life locked up in a tower, it had been so...much. He loved that smell almost as much as the ocean breeze. He'd make sure it was perfect for Finn.]
If you think of anything else, please let me know of it and thank you for your help.
