I wish I knew more about programming.

It seems weird. All these people's secrets leaking out onto the network at the same time our messages are going all wrong.

It feels like something's coming.

So either someone working from the inside is trying to do something, or the system itself is going haywire for some reason?

I guess the only question is why now? It's not like this city doesn't already enjoy revealing our secrets every time that finder thing goes up.

Like you said, maybe someone from the inside is trying to do something.
But why would they target us, too?

Maybe it's not so random, either. All of those blackmail posts on the network. People who have something they wouldn't want anyone to know about.

Or whoever it is was trying to do something else and these glitches were an unexpected consequence.

I wish we could talk to them.
Maybe the people who've been blackmailed know more about who's doing it. We could start there?

That's not a bad idea. Especially if it could be coming from the same person. Or a group. Somebody's definitely got enough reach or skill to contact this many people through the network and still not get caught.

Do you know anyone here who has the skills to trace something like this? If we could get them the comm of someone who'd been blackmailed ...

Maybe. If the woman I'm thinking of is back again, I've seen her talk about being able to hack the network before. Then again, she also ended up in jail for it at least one of those times.

That doesn't mean she wouldn't be willing to try it again, for the right reason.

That's true. I just don't want to put anyone in danger if I can help it.

As long as we're here we're all in danger. You wouldn't force anyone to help, but you should still let them.

I know, but there's a difference in danger just by the circumstances we're in and added risks someone might face by directly going against the laws here. I need to make sure that they know what they could potentially be coming up against before I ask them to do anything like that.

[ but he's been here a long while now, and she knows he's at least somewhat comfortable in his life. it's important to her to push a little about reminding him to try asking, despite the danger. he can't protect everyone without inviting all of them to keep their heads down and just go along with it — and though that might be easier, it's not better. ]
